Ego, a force that drives us all,
The root of many a problem big and small,
It's the source of strife, the cause of pain,
And the reason we struggle again and again.
In relationships, it rears its ugly head,
Making us think only of ourselves instead,
We become blind to the needs of those we love,
And fail to see the damage our ego does.
Communication suffers when ego is in control,
We're quick to argue and slow to console,
Our words become weapons, our tone harsh and cold,
And we fail to see the hurt that we unfold.
Mental health, too, is impacted by ego's grip,
We compare and compete, always trying to outstrip,
Our self-worth becomes tied to our achievements,
And we forget the joy of life's simpler ingredients.
But there is hope, for we can choose to let go,
To surrender our ego and let empathy grow,
To listen and understand, and truly connect,
And to build relationships with love and respect.
So let us put aside our ego's demands,
And instead, reach out with open hands,
For it is only when we shed our selfishness,
That we can truly experience happiness.
